Across the green, pleasant, and often, very damp land of the West Country, beautiful orchards capture that most fleeting British sunshine. Whilst many have unfortunately been stripped or uprooted, deemed to expensive or difficult to maintain, thankfully, there remain a number whose custodians are following their intuition, taking their time (and taking influence from the newer generation of winemakers) in order to produce some stunning Ciders & Perries.
This lovely festive selection includes:
2020 Fine Perry (Yellow Huffcap & Oldfield), Gould Ciders & Perries, Grampound
Hidden off the main road into Truro is Jonathan Gould's orchard. From this 3 acre plot he toils humbly to create some of the country's finest ciders and perries. This blend of heritage perry pear varieties bring a dryness and none of the cloying sweetness often associated with the mass produced modern offerings. A perfect way to kick off Christmas Day
2019 Reserve, Smith Hayne, Crediton
Anna and Will Chambers have spent the last 10 years combining their day jobs with a love for orchards. With it they have created this delightful medium sweet, lightly sparkling cider. Something for Boxing Day I'd say, a great accompaniment to your leftover sarnie.
2020 Saison Pomme, Find & Foster, Huxham
Polly & Matt Hilton have spent the last 5 years seeking out the hidden and forgotten orchards of the Exe Valley, in order bring them back to life. This is their ode to the traditional harvest beer, a quaffable, dry and spicy offering made for the seasonal workers in the fields. No manual labour needed on your part to enjoy this though, just an ideal bottle foil for your Christmas bird.
And, if you opt for the additional 3 bottles, you'll also enjoy:
2020 Four Trees, Chaimberlains Farm, Find & Foster, Huxham
A very special bottle of Perry from Polly & Matt. As the name suggests, picked from just four trees in one of their adopted orchards, this is a beautiful balance of sweetness, backed up with a lovely dry finish which demands another sip. To be enjoyed whenever the moment seems right. A real celebration.
2019 Babouche, Wilding Cider, Chew Magna
Sam & Beccy's yearly ancestral method, dry sparkling cider is an incredible dance partner with your Christmas Eve fish, or the pre-dinner oysters of course.
2016 Tamoshanta, Pilton, Shepton Mallet
A regular vintage of Tamoshanta is always something to celebrate, but modern master Martin Berkeley has been keeping this in the cellar for the last 5 years to help the flavours build and build. Tamoshanta 2016 is now beautifully smooth and mellow with delicate notes of caramelised apple. A fine way to conclude the Christmas meal, with a little smoky sweetness.
