Mangalitza pigs were established in the early 1800s when wild boar were crossed with indigenous Serbian and Hungarian breeds. They are notoriously slow to mature, with small litters, and below-average yields. Genetically unmuddied, they grow as they once did in the wild, taking up to 24 months to mature to full weight. As a result, given there is the due diligence and care in their upbringing, feeding and husbandry, they are capable of producing pork like no other. Whilst the products from these pigs are a regular mainstay of the shop, often in the form of our dried hams and sausages, we rarely offer them in such a format; a few fresh items for the dinner table, and a welcome haul for the week ahead.
